I hope everyone had a restful and joy-filled Thanksgiving Holiday!

It was great having the students jump back into the swing of things last week!

This week we've been talking about what makes for good performance and productive rehearsals.  A short list includes:
 - Be Prepared with Music and Instrument
 - Use correct playing Posture
 - Maintaining Focus and Watch Conductor 
 - Playing with our BEST Sound
 - Playing the correct notes and rhythms
 - Practice at home

UPDATES & Reminders:

  • Students should be Practicing 30 minutes a day / at least 150 minutes per week.
  • Practice Journals are due Mondays.
  • Band Project with the U of M is 3:15- 5:15 Tuesdays & Thursdays (the last day is 12/12)
  • Winter Concert for Varsity Band is Thursday, December 19, 2013 7:00/6:30 call time
  • All Remaining Instrument Rental Fees are due by Dec. 20.
  • I'm looking for some Concert Band students to help out at the Varsity Band Concert. 
Firebird Band (Beginning 5th & 6th grade) 
Meets: Tuesday - 12/10  & Thursday - 12/12

 First 5 notes on Instruments 

   - Flute, Trombone, Baritone BC, Percussion : Bb, C, D, Eb, F
   - Clarinet & Trumpet: C, D, E, F, G
   - Alto Sax: G, A, B, C, D

Note Values & Rhythms: whole, half, quarter
Musical Symbols:  time signature, fermata, breath mark, double bar.

Performance of Music Notation: Etudes from Standard of Excellence Pgs. 8 & 9

Varsity Band (Intermediate 5th & 6th grade) 

Meets: Monday - 12/9, Wednesday,  - 12/11, Friday  12/13

Concert Preparation - (Concert Dec. 19, 7pm)
   - Heritage of Liberty: America the Beautiful
   - Zip Drive
   - Let's Go Band II
Dotted Rhythms: a dot adds half the notes value.
Vocabulary:  
>Harmony - two different parts playing together.
>Unison - Playing the same thing, at the same time.
Bb Major Scale w/ Arpeggio and Thirds - memorized

Concert Band (7th & 8th grade) 
Meets: Daily

Pitch matching and Tuning
Major Scalesconcert Bb, Eb, F, Ab , Db, Gb
Mixed Rhythms utilizing eighth & sixteenth notes 

Rehearsal: In the Mood,  A+: A"Precise" Prelude and an "Excellent" March, Metropolis

Ear training & Aural Transcription:  Payphone by Maroon 5, Jingle Bells, Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph.
